Community Dialogue - Can't We Talk?

  • The Well/Queen Anne United Methodist Church 1606 5th Ave W Seattle WA 98119 United States (map)

An Experiment in Conversation, Contemplation, and our Search for Common Ground on the issues that separate us!

Tickets are free and open to the public.

Imagine you are at a public meeting where the topic is immigration (or gun control, or abortion, or . . . .). It is a forum where all opinions are welcome, where you feel that you are accepted and respected. Where, by the same token, the forum ensures that everyone feels they are being heard, seen and appreciated.

This kind of gathering is non-traditional. It also important and necessary if we are ever to agree on policies that work for the well-being of us all. For it to happen it will be necessary to develop communication skills and practices that enable us to engage with those who differ from us politically, economically and socially.

The goal of this Series is to develop the community capacity to acquire and apply these skills and practices in an intentional manner over the next 5 sessions. We will draw on our religious and spiritual traditions for wisdom and ethical values that can improve the way we engage each other on topical issues. They will also help us avoid the polarization that is so prevalent today in our families, communities, and in the public square.

This Series will culminate in the collective design and sponsorship of an effective and replicable model for civil discourse on a current topical issue at a Town Hall Forum on August 4, 2018.
